R & D in Genetic Resources for Food and Drug Administration
The research team of Chiang Mai University (CMU) have conducted Research and Development of Genetic Resources for the Food and Drug Administration by using Local Vegetables and Medical Plants in the Community.� They created a model for the study and focused on the agricultural community and its senior people, ensuring the food can be consumed safely.
This research project is a collaboration, the team comprising of
Mr. Chinakrid Suwannakeree, Agricultural staff Expert, Center for Agricultural Resource System Research;
Ms. Panpen� Kruathai, Researcher of Social Research Institute;
Ms. Nittaya� Boontim, Researcher of Science and Technology Research Institute;
Ms. Takonwan� Siriswad, Researcher of Science and Technology Research Institute;
Mr. Nopadon� Sunyai, Agricultural Promotion Expert Staff, Agricultural Office, Doi Saket District, Chiang Mai Province.
The research project is about knowledge management of Lanna Drug Recipes for treating cancer or Baheng. It has been discovered (Panpen and others, 2011) that local vegetables and medical plants have an essential role for consumers in this regards.� A survey was conducted and data compiled from the ancient Lanna documents (Bailan and Passa) which found in 34 drug documents, containing� 300 drug recipes that have been used in treating cancer (Baheng), recipes which use� 55 kinds of local vegetables and medical plants.�
Also in these 34 drug documents, there are 140 kinds of local vegetables and medical plants and 368 drug recipes which are used in treating Kut cancer (Baheng) by using 155 kinds of local vegetables and medical plants for healing.� Moreover, the researchers discovered that, there are many kinds of local vegetables and medical plants which can be used as food and drugs.� So, the research team feel that it is useful for taking this knowledge to the community, especially the agricultural and senior citizen community.� Researchers of the university & community, agricultural leaders, community leaders, president of senior citizens club and local philosophers, they all collaborate together to develop and create genetic resources for food and drug by using local vegetables and medical plants in the community.
This research project is conducted by various methods, including surveying the target areas, meetings in the community, farmer group trainings & seminars (a selected number of farmers were asked to participate in the project), develop and create productive areas to grow local vegetables and medical plants by selected farmers to be used as the genetic resources for food and drug.
The outcome of this research project from the survey shows that the target areas consist of Papong� Subdistrict in Doi Saket District, Chiang Mai Province and Wang-Pang Subdistrict in Wiang Nong Long District, Lumphun Province.�
For the development of local vegetables and medical plants as genetic resources for food and drug,� Papong Subdistrict in Doi Saket District and Chiang Mai Province is able to develop genetic resources in 5 areas.� And in the area of Wang Pang Subdistrict where there are essential local vegetables and medical plants consisting of Phak-Wan-Baan, Phak-Sieng-Da, Thua-Phoo, Phak-Huan-Moo, Fak-Kao, Phak-Tam-Leung, Phak-Plung, Cha-Ploo, Ka-Prao, Ho-ra-pha, Mang-lak, Sa-ra-nae (peppermint), Tha-Krai (Lemongrass), Ginger, Galangal oil, Turmeric, Deviate, Khao-thong, tomatoes, Ma-Kua-Puang (eggplant), Cha-om, bergamot, zucchini, pumpkin, Moringa, Carrie, Phe-ka, Dee-Plee (Long pepper), Phak-Good (Fern), Ya-nang, Spinach, Coriander, Pursley, Bitter gourd, Morinda, Rang-Juad, Phak-Hoo-Sua, Pandan, Pennywort, Nguak-Pla-Mor, Wonword, Fah-ta-lai-Jon (Andrographis paniculala), Lentils.
From this study, the researcher team found that the development of genetic resources in target areas was able to be done by promoting knowledge to the� public sector in the form of integration with the communitys need for knowledge, while in addition, this research promotes to potential for the communities to experience vital health by safe food and drug consumption from local vegetables and medical plants.
This Research and Development of Genetic Resources for the Food and Drug Administration by using Local Vegetables and Medical Plants in the Community can gain the sources for production, to be able to be developed as genetic resources for Food and Drug for the communities.� Moreover these areas are original community models for other regional communities to learn and prosper from.
Agricultural Staff of Chiang Mai University was awarded First Prize in Oral Presentation from the Nutrition Association of Thailand
Mr. Chinnakrit Suwannakeeree, Agricultural Staff Expert, Center for Agricultural Resource System Research, Faculty of Agriculture, Chiang Mai University, was awarded the First Prize with 5,000 baht in the contest of Oral Presentation, held by the Nutrition Association of Thailand, under patronage of H.R.H. Princess Mahachakree Sirindhorn.� He was awarded for his project on Research and Development of Genetic Resources for the Food and Drug Administration by using Local Vegetables and Medical Plants in the Community in The 6th Thailand Congress of Nutrition, in the field of food towards Nutrition during September 10-12, 2012 at Bangkok.
